Spider-Man Homecoming: watch the first trailer

The very first teaser trailer for Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Homecoming has arrived, featuring our first look at Tom Holland as Peter Parker since his appearance in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War.

The action picks up with Spidey (Holland) navigating through high school, and then asking the one and only Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) how to become an Avenger. We see glimpses of Peter Parker’s friends, his high school, and the villain known as the Vulture (Michael Keaton) who threatens to kill everyone Peter Parker loves.

Spider-Man: Homecoming, directed by Jon Watts, is a reboot of Sony’s stagnant Spider-Man franchise, after two movies starring Andrew Garfield in the title role didn’t perform at the box office the way the studio wanted them to — especially the second one, 2014’s Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Homecoming brings Peter Parker back to his high school misfit roots, but with a few wrinkles and mysteries, including what role Zendaya, Parker’s rumored love interest, will be playing in the film. (The movie’s IMDB page is riddled with blanks, and many characters just have first names.)

Homecoming marks a bit of new territory for Sony and Marvel. Spider-Man usually lives in a separate cinematic universe from Marvel’s Avengers properties (as do the X-Men) because of film rights. But in 2015 Sony forged a deal with Marvel that finally allows the web-slinger to appear in Marvel movies, which in turn helps boost the superhero’s solo ventures, hence the smirky allusion in Homecoming’s title to Spider-Man not only being a high school student but also coming home to Marvel.

And from the looks of its trailer, we may be in for a promising start.

Spider-Man: Homecoming will hit theaters on July 7, 2017.
